Remarks by Special Representative of the Secretary-General Lisa Buttenheim following the meeting of Cyprus Leaders
Transcript of Remarks by Special Representative of the Secretary-General Lisa Buttenheim following the meeting of Cyprus Leaders at UNFICYP Chief of Mission Residence, United Nations Protected Area, Nicosia, 5 December 2011
The leaders met for close to two hours. They continued their discussions on external relations and property. The United Nations will have bilateral meetings with both sides to continue working on these issues. The Representatives will meet on Thursday the 8th of December at 3 pm to continue the discussions. And as you know, the next Leader’s meeting will be held on Monday the 12th of December at 10 AM. That meeting will be chaired by Mr Downer who will be back.
Question: Is Mr. Downer currently making contacts outside the Island about Cyprus?
SRSG: I think it’s fair to say that whenever he is outside the island, he is thinking about Cyprus a lot but I can’t tell you where he is right now. He is coming back over this coming weekend.
Question: What will they discuss at the next meeting?
SRSG: Actually, it wasn’t discussed at today’s meeting what the topic would be for next Thursday but I think it’s important that the Representatives will follow up, sorry… next Monday Leader’s meeting but I think the fact that the Representatives will meet on Thursday is important.
Question: Will there still be some back and forth diplomacy in the meantime?
SRSG: Yes, that will continue.
